This diagram shows the proposed El that was to have run
from the corner of Walnut & 4th, south one block to 3rd,
and then east 3/4 mile to the current location of Columbia
Parkway. A 3rd
St. Viaduct following this approximate
path was in fact built in 1959 -- but for automobiles!
This recent photo looking north at the corner of Walnut
& 3rd St. shows the hill that would have made the
subway to el transition posible in just one block length.
Typically, subway/elevated ramps require a greater length,
meaning one cross street is permanently blocked.
